The Whole Tooth About
Cyrous Sheikh, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Cyrous Sheikh didn’t start out wanting to be a dentist. But once he was bitten, he wasn’t shy about pursuing that goal.
The fateful moment happened one day while he was attending the University of Minnesota.
“I was interested in arts, especially metal sculpture, and biology at the same time,” he said. “One day, there was an open house for the Dental School and after I attended, I felt excited about becoming a dentist.”
Dr. Sheikh received his D.D.S. in 1992 and his Master’s degree in Pediatric Dentistry from the University of Minnesota in 1994. He practiced as an associate in different offices in Minnesota before relocating to San Diego. In 2000, he opened his own practice in Carlsbad.
But it isn’t like a medical career was completely out of character for Sheikh. His dad is a retired pediatrician and the good doctor says his father’s focus on his patients has influenced the way he practices dentistry.
“I have always aspired to the ‘old school’ approach that the primary goal of being a pediatric dentist is providing care to kids,” Dr. Sheikh said. “As a child, I remember my father answering the emergency calls at odd hours and that dedication is second nature for me. We need to be there for the kids.”
To that end, Dr. Sheikh has worked at Rady Children’s Hospital and, like his dad did so many years ago, shows up at odd hours to help patients with extreme dental emergencies.
In addition, Dr. Sheikh has taught other dental students the skills they need to be successful on the job, and he says being an instructor has given him an edge.
“As a lot of instructors can attest, residents make you stay sharp and the learning process works both ways – we discover answers together many times,” he said, adding that when he was teaching, he always kept a hand in “real world dentistry.”
San Diego County is a huge metropolitan area, but Dr. Sheikh still ascribes to the ideals of the small town dentist who puts patients first. The reason is simple: “Working with kids is the highlight of my job,” he said. “Kids are fun and simple and seeing them grow is amazing.”
